Interactive narratives are inextricable from the way that we understand our encounters with digital technology. This is based upon the way that these encounters are processually formed into a narrative of episodic events, arranged and re-arranged by various levels of agency. After describing past research conducted at the iCinema Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, this paper sets out a framework within which to build a relational theory of interactive narrative formation, outlining future research in the area.

Occupational health remains neglected in developing countries because of competing social, economic and political challenges. Ethical issues in the workplace related to the hazards and risks of becoming infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana, through the bite of naturally infected sand flies, is another area of concern that has been neglected as well. We report here the results of reviewing two entomological field studies carried out in our research center from 2003 to 2006. Eight students from our School of Biology were (...) invited to catch sand flies. A total of six of the eight (75%) developed a typical clinical picture of Localized Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (LCL) caused by L. (L.) mexicana. The Totonac homegarden is a traditionally designed agroecosystem mixing different elements, such as cultivated and wild plants, and livestock. Our objective was to understand the role and importance of homegardens as a strategy for subsistence and natural resources management. Anthropological fieldwork was carried out in Coxquihui, Veracruz, Mexico, a Totonac community. Conventional sampling using a questionnaire yielded a sample of 40 individuals, each representing a family group. Personal interviews, life stories, observations, and field transects enriched survey information. Fieldwork permitted identification (...) of four types of Totonac homegardens: backyards, cropping fields, acahuales or fallow fields, and fences or field edges. Each of these gardens yields an array of products and services important for several cultural roles and natural resource management aims. Totonacs see land as the dominant and most critical resource. A great deal of terrain is steeply sloped and soils are poor. Homegardens play a key role in a production system that minimizes these site limitations, striking a balance between resource maintenance and subsistence needs. Their functions are ecological, to foster a multistrata vegetation cover, and a continuous supply of organic matter to the soil; economic, serving as living storehouses where diverse products (food, timber, firewood, forage, animals, ceremonial supplies, medicinal products), are kept through the annual cycle; and social, performing various social roles such as growing medicinal, ritual, and edible plants, thus supporting beliefs and culture continuity. Studies like this contribute to a better understanding of Totonac culture and native ecology, and give ideas for a better land management. (shrink)

Because of the importance of board members’ resource provision and monitoring, a substantial body of research has been devoted to ascertaining how directors can be incented to perform their responsibilities. We use social exchange theory to empirically examine how board members’ resource provision and monitoring are affected by their perceptions of the CEOs’ trustworthiness. Our findings suggest that board members’ perceptions of the CEO’s ability, benevolence, and integrity have different effects on the board members’ resource provision and monitoring. The Stroop effect is a well-documented phenomenon, demonstrating both interference and facilitation effects. Many versions of the Stroop task were created, according to the purposes of its applications, varying in numerous aspects. While many versions are developed to investigate the mechanisms of the effect itself, the Stroop effect is also considered a general measure of attention, inhibitory control, and executive functions. In this paper, we implement “eStroop”: a new digital version based on verbal responses, measuring the main processes involved in (...) the traditional effect. eStroop features four categories of stimuli in four different colors: geometrical shapes, neutral words, congruent words, and incongruent words. The results of the administration to 307 University students confirm the Stroop effect and offer baseline data for future research and clinical testing. Direct comparisons with other recent versions of the task are discussed, offering insights into differences and similarities between different task variables. (shrink)

The article presents the enarrationes in which St. Augustine comments on the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector who went up to the Temple to pray (Lk 18: 9-14). The chronology and setting of each of the enarrationes where the parable is commented are highlighted. Subsequently, following a chronological order, the main ideas that are emphasised by the Bishop of Hippo in his commentary on the above-mentioned parable are highlighted, distinguishing between the enarrationes preached before the Pelagian controversy, (...) and those preached within it. Finally, the article makes a reading of the whole, in order to see more clearly the ideas and nuances that Augustine highlights in this parable within the enarrationes in Psalmos, paying particular attention to the anti-Pelagian ideas and the Biblica Texts that Augustine underlines in his commentary on the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector. El artículo pone de manifiesto, en primer lugar, la escasa bibliografía que existe en español sobre el tema de la ecología en las obras y el pensamiento de san Agustín. Posteriormente, señala los tres peligros que existen al abordar este tema, a saber, el del anacronismo, el de la tergiversación de los textos agustinianos y el de la excesiva espiritualización del tema. Después hace una breve reseña de los aciertos de la obra de Scott Dunham The Trinity and the Creation (...) in Augustine. An ecological analysis, destacando que el Dios creador es el mismo que el Dios trino, y que en el pensamiento agustiniano sobre la creación no está ausente la cristología y la pneumatología. Se presentan a continuación las líneas ecológicas agustinianas, destacando, en primer lugar, la importancia de la Sagrada Escritura en el pensamiento del doctor de Hi¬pona. Luego se pone de manifiesto cómo la creación es comparable a un libro, en el que es preciso leer la presencia y la obra redentora de Dios. Se destaca que la naturaleza tiene un valor sacramental en un sentido lato y por ello su cuidado es necesario. Por otro lado, se muestra la figura del ser humano como un “villicus”, es decir, como el administrador o el guardián de la creación, prolongando en los escritos de san Agustín el mandato bíblico del libro del Génesis. Se señala asimismo la interrelacionalidad de todos los seres en el cosmos, la idea de una creación continuada y la importancia de la conversión ecológica. (shrink)

Several scholars have recently criticized the dominant emphasis upon mid-level principles in bioethics best exemplified by Beauchamp and Childress's Principles of Biomedical Ethics . In Part I of this essay, I assess the fairness and cogency of three broad criticisms raised against ‘principlism’ as an approach: (1) that principlism, as an exercise in applied ethics, is insufficiently attentive to the dialectical relations between ethical theory and moral practice; (2) that principlism fails to offer a systematic account of the principles of (...) nonmaleficence, beneficence, respect for autonomy, and justice; and (3) that principlism, as a version of moral pluralism, is fatally flawed by its theoretical agnosticism. While acknowledging that Beauchamp and Childress's reliance upon Ross's version of intuitionism is problematic, I conclude that the critics of principlism have failed to make a compelling case against its theoretical or practical adequacy as an ethical approach. In Part II, I assess the moral theory developed by Bernard Gert in Morality: A New Justification of the Moral Rules , because Gert has recommended his approach as a systematic alternative to principlism. I judge Gert's theory to be seriously incomplete and, in contrast to principlism, unable to generate coherent conclusions about cases of active euthanasia and paternalism.
